What foreigners actually need to live legally in China, and how it differs from the Chinese "居住证."
Avoid the 30-day deadline rush; time to fix missing docs.
2–3 photocopies of every doc saves counter time (some bureaus sell copies at ¥1/page).
Marriage/birth certificates often need Chinese translation with official stamp; prep these at home or via Alipay translation service.
Work/family permits can be issued for 2–5 years in some cities if your work contract or family status qualifies.
Travel while processing? If your passport is kept, ask for a receipt + photo ID copy; domestic flights usually accept it, but international exit is not allowed until collection.
Foreigners need 居留许可. "居住证" is for domestic citizens/HK-Macao-Taiwan residents.
Go to EEA immediately; explain and pay the overstay fine. Expect stricter scrutiny next renewal.
Ask for blue merchant QR (商户码) or pay by bank card/cash.
Submit with a stamped explanation letter and appointment record; some cities grant a short stay extension while you finish paperwork.
Re-register address within 24 h and file a 变更 at EEA; carrying old address risks fines.
Remain on your L / X2 / M / F visa and extend once at EEA if eligible.
Use licensed chauffeur / taxis / HSR instead of driving; many services (bank, SIM) now accept passport + hotel registration without residence permit in tier-1 cities.
For regional commuters: keep China stays <30 days per entry until your paperwork is ready.
